Buying Your First Boat

Author: Rob Battas

If you're thinking of buying a boat, don't rush into your decision without taking some important things into consideration. Most of the time people purchase a boat for fun activities, so your first decision is to decide exactly how and where you will use it.

You'll need to decide what type of a boat is right for you. Ask yourself what you want to use the boat for and where you want to use it. There are several different types of boats that are used for different purposes. Keep in mind that if you're not experienced with larger boats that you'll want to stick to a size that you can manage comfortably without feeling out of control in tricky situations.

One type of boat that is very popular is the cruising boat. These boats have been built for cruising the open water and lakes, with pleasure being the only intent. Most cruisers will come equipped with at least one cabin that is great for overnight trips.

Fishing boats are another popular model. You can take these out on fresh or saltwater. If fishing is your passion, this will be the boat for you to buy. Do keep in mind however, that there is less room for passengers than there is on the cruisers. If you plan to make overnight fishing trips, be sure to get one large enough to have a cabin.

Next kind of boat is the one built for speed. Best suited to adventure seekers and loving water sports such as waterskiing or wake boarding.

Once you've decided what type of boat you want to buy you'll need to think about the size you need. The larger the boat is the more functionality you'll have with the use of cabins, kitchen room, a head, and deck room. If you're buying your first boat, and are on a limited budget, you of course won't want to buy a large boat to start with. Buy a boat within your experience and work your way up with your next boat purchase.

Another option could be to buy a second hand boat. This would allow you to have all the features that you want in your boat at a much lesser price. New boats do have the advantage of having all their warranties and guarantees. But you can solve this problem by buying from a reliable dealer who specialises in second hand boats or buy directly from the original owner.

After you have decided the kind of boat that you want select a model. Boats have like cars various models, shapes & sizes. Don't be over impressed by any brand name in terms of boat manufacturers. Brand names are not always worthwhile buys.

In spite of the various decisions that you are required to make before buying a boat don't forget that basically a boat is a ticket to unlimited fun and adventure.
