The Toronto Maple Leafs Prepare for the 2005 NHL Season

Author: Austin Culley

As the 2005 National Hockey League Season approaches, General Manager John Ferguson, Head Coach Pat Quinn, and the rest of the management and scouting staff work to assemble the best group of talent possible to produce a winning team.

Naturally, as is the case with any prolific organization, ill-informed armchair critics and professed media experts will come out of the woodwork to spend an endless amount of time ridiculing the efforts of the organization to produce a winning team. However, lack of knowledge of operations allows for the forgiveness of such individuals, and instead focus remains on the positive aspects of what will turn out to be a very exciting year for all involved; from team to fans alike.

One of the most enjoyable recent developments is the team's ability to keep one of its all-time favorite players on the roster - Tie Domi. Though Tie may not an offensive machine, and perhaps maybe not the king-of-the-hill anymore in terms of enforcing protection, he is still without any doubt a major contributor to the team. Tie brings an attitude and atmosphere to the Toronto Maple Leafs that is invaluable ... heart and toughness, and he can still punch out a few lights. We love the guy ... and always will.

John Ferguson is doing very well considering circumstances, and though others like to focus on his inexperience in terms of years at the helm, they should remember that he comes from experience, and stands beside experience. His work is appreciated by many.

Pat Quinn is a terrific coach, and arguable one of the best coaches to ever guide the Toronto Maple Leafs throughout their storied history. He is highly respected by the majority of fans.

Mats Sundin is the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and is without a doubt the teams' most valuable player. His leadership skills and overall talent are irreplaceable.

The welcomed additions of Jason Allison and Jeff O'Neil will no doubt improve the team this coming season, and it is hopeful that other members of the team still without solidified contracts, such as Nik Antropov, remain with the group for this season, as well as the next.

Character is what has always defined the Toronto Maple Leafs, and whether successful in the standing or not, it has always been the character of this team that compels the adoration of its fan base. Players such as Darcy Tucker, Ed Belfour, Bryan McCabe, and Tomas Kaberle add to a mix of great talent and unique personality to give the team the level of excitement fans anticipate for the coming season.
