Bathroom Safety Tips

Author: Anne Clarke

There are many potential dangers for you and your child in a bathroom - luckily, there are things that you can do to keep your bathroom and shower safe. First of all, if you have a child, you should set your water heaters to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This lessens the chances of your child getting burnt when turning on the water by herself, or even when you run a bath for her.

It is also important if you have a child (or even a dog) to keep all medicines, makeup, and even mouthwash out of reach. Luckily, medicine cabinets were invented just to carry out such a task. You also want to keep sharp items like razors out of the way so that your child cannot reach them.

There are also safety precautions that you should take when bathing. First of all, never keep anything plugged into an outlet near the bath. Water is a high conductor of electricity. Also, you should put a non-slip mat in your bath or shower. Baths can get very slippery when wet, and when you have to take that high step over the side of the bathtub, you highly increase your chance of having a painful fall. A shower mat can help your feet get a grip in the shower.

A shower bench is also a great idea to ensure no falling. How can you fall when you're sitting? A shower bench is comfortable and easy to use for people of all ages, but it is also wonderful for senior citizens or somebody with a disability. It is also a good idea to install hand-rails in your bath area if you have a higher-than-average chance of falling.

Depending on your age and abilities, there are many different items that you can use that can increase your safety while in the bathroom and shower. For more helpful ideas, you may want to talk to your doctor or a supplier.
