Unfinished Furniture

Author: Mark Rees

In our "have it now" consumer mentality, we sometimes are quick to purchase items such as furniture without taking the time to really consider what it is we are exactly going to own for the next few years. The furniture of today largely consists of particle board or some type of composite wood that looks pretty at first, but can look shoddy over a short period of time as it wears poorly. Many furniture manufacturers are gearing towards mass production and consumers are quick to snap it up and then realize too late that their purchase is anything but "heirloom" quality. And the cost of this faux wood is getting ridiculous.

A more affordable and smarter choice would be to consider unfinished furniture. Many cities and websites offer this attractive alternative to particle board furniture at a considerable savings. The advantages are many.

First, as mentioned earlier, is the savings. Purchasing a piece of unfinished furniture and finishing it oneself is almost always less costly than purchasing a comparably priced already finished piece of furniture. Paying less does not mean buying lower quality. On the contrary, unfinished furniture manufacturers must use a higher-grade lumber in furniture production because they can't "hide" defects that other manufacturers can under their finishes.

Secondly, the options are almost endless when finishing unfinished furniture the way YOU want. You can match existing furniture or be as creative as you wish with an almost limited selection of stains or paints. You can finish your furniture in the exact hue to match drapery, carpet or other furnishings. Most finishes now are water based which are environmentally friendly, easy-to-apply and fast drying.

Thirdly, the spraying process in a factory may have missed spots or been applied unevenly to finished furniture. This can begin to show up in a few months as poorly finished furniture begins to blister and peel. When you finish your own furniture you can be assured that the finish is applied evenly and thoroughly for a durable long life of use.

Finishing furniture can be enjoyable and relaxing. There is a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that comes with creating your own "masterpiece". Furniture, custom finished by you, can be a family heirloom for generations to come. Of course, many unfinished furniture stores offer custom finishing if desired.

For savings, better quality and the satisfaction of a job well done, unfinished furniture is the smart choice for discerning furniture owners.
